A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an energetic, driven and passionate Trade Mark Attorney to join our legal team in our Cheltenham head office. Reporting to the Head of Legal, you will play a key role in supporting the global IP strategy of our rapidly growing and changing business. The legal team’s motto is “Enabling Creativation” and it works in close, trusted partnership with a number of key business decision-makers. Our IP team is unique and innovative, managing all of our global trade mark filings, prosecutions, oppositions and litigation centrally meaning that we are exposed to a high calibre of varied, challenging and technical IP work.  Our team is highly-regarded and was awarded World Trademark Review “Team of the Year” in 2018.

You will 

  • Communicate with the business to understand our priorities and advise how best to protect every aspect of our intellectual property – especially trade marks and designs
  • Work with our formalities and paralegal team to prepare and file trade mark and design applications
  • Work closely with our brand protection team on enforcement strategy and priorities
  • Consider and advise on watch notices and oppositions strategy on a global basis
  • Work with external counsel to manage all of Superdry’s trade mark opposition actions
  • Prepare and draft UK and EU oppositions and/or cancellation actions and all accompanying documentation including statements of case and witness evidence
  • Assist the Head of Legal with litigation strategy, including instructing external investigators
  • Assist in the execution of the group’s global IP strategy and provide your informed views on the shape of that strategy
  • Assist with product clearance and advise the business on IP risks. Where appropriate propose solutions to overcome such risks
  • Ensure that the proactive partnership between the business and the IP team is maintained, particularly ensuring close engagement with the Design team
  • Manage external counsel relationships in a cost effective way

You are 

  • Preferably a recently qualified (or due to qualify) UK trade mark attorney with an excellent academic record.  For the right candidate, we will consider other applicants with an IP background with differing levels of experience
  • From an in-house or private practice background with an instinctive commercial approach to trade mark law and procedure both in the UK and the EU
  • Confident of dealing with external counsel on a global basis
  • Able to work effectively with technology (such as IPPO (webTMS) and SAEGIS)
  • Able to work autonomously and make independent decisions
  • A strong and clear communicator who is able to build rapport with key stakeholders internally and externally
  • Someone with excellent presentation skills
  • Computer literate, particularly with MS Office
  • Someone with excellent deadline management and organisation skills
  • Able to produce written work to an excellent standard with a high attention to detail
  • Able to grasp how your decisions and the IP strategy impacts on the rest of the business
  • Interested in fashion or retail and be confident conveying practical and meaningful advice to designers and creatives
