PRESS RELEASE from IPAN

Mike Weatherley, Intellectual Property Adviser to the Prime Minister and the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has addressed the Intellectual Property Awareness Network  (IPAN) to discuss his role championing IP.

In his speech, Mike highlighted his background in IP, his two parliamentary competitions which were established to raise awareness of IP, Rock the House and Film the House. Mike also detailed what  he has achieved as the IP Adviser to the PM, a role which he has held since September 2013. Mike has worked closely with both the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and the new national Police  Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU).

Principal achievements since Mike undertook his IP role include: A strong contribution to the Statutory Instrument (Hargreaves) process; scrutiny of the IP Bill (inc sentencing review); Helping to  bring industry and Government together; and the publishing of two IP reports (see below).

Mike has published two reports on the protection of IP. To read Mike’s report, Search Engines and Piracy: A Discussion Paper, in full, click here. Follow the Money: Financial Options to Assist in the  Battle Against Online Piracy, which addresses the detrimental impact of illegal websites profiting from advertising is available to read in full here. A report on Education will be published in the  next few weeks.

Commenting on the Follow the Money report, the Prime Minister said: “Mike Weatherley's 'Follow the Money' discussion paper is an interesting addition to this important area of work and the  Government will look at it closely. It is encouraging that creative industries are building a stronger relationship with our enforcement bodies, such as the new national Police Intellectual  Property Crime Unit that the Government has established. Intellectual Property is an important property right that contributes enormously to our economy.”

Commenting, Mike said: “I am delighted that I have been given the opportunity to address the Intellectual Property Awareness Network. IPAN is a great community whose core mission is close to my  heart – the promotion of IP. I hope that IPAN members will take on board the points that I raised in my speech and work together with the Government to help establish Britain as an international  bastion of IP protection.”

John Ogier, IPAN’s Vice Chair said, “Mike’s messages resonate with IPAN’s objectives to continue to raise awareness about the many variables which form the basis of IP’s significance to the UK  economy. IP education and access to finance for SME’s are at the heart of our current research projects”.
