Disruption: the world and IP

Welcome to our 2019 Spring Conference – two full days of exciting networking opportunities and CPD sessions with IP professionals from across the globe.
Our conference will tackle ‘Disruption: the world and IP’ with a diverse range of speakers from private practice in the UK and EU as well as in-house attorneys from huge names including IBM, Bayer and Superdry.
In addition to experiencing valuable talks on such a wide range of topics as blockchain, Brexit and artificial intelligence – do also make use of the breaks to network with IP professionals in our break-out areas.

Host city for the 2019 Spring Conference is London and we expect a full house at our historic venue in the heart of the city - IET London: Savoy Place.
Preceding the conference is an Intensive Design Seminar on 13th March hosted by Gowling WLG at More London Riverside – just down the river from the main conference venue.
On the afternoon of 13th March, welcome drinks will be held at nearby Brigade Bar + Kitchen, London Bridge where you can celebrate the start of the 2019 conference with UK and international attorneys, solicitors, barristers and support service providers.

Keynote speech
Rt Hon Lord Smith of Finsbury (Chris Smith), IPReg

Chris began his political career as a Labour Councillor, becoming MP for Islington South and Finsbury in 1983. When Labour came to power in 1997 he became Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and Chairman of the Millennium Commission.
Over four years as Secretary of State he restored free admission to national museums and galleries, established NESTA, the Film Council, Creative Partnerships for schools, and the Foundation for Youth Music, expanded funding for the arts and sport, championed the creative industries for the first time in Government, and began the switchover process for digital television.
Chris returned to the back benches in 2001, playing a leading role in opposing the Iraq war, standing down from the Commons in 2005. Immediately afterwards he was made a life peer, taking his seat in the House of Lords in July 2005. Chris currently sits on the crossbenches as an independent Peer.
Currently the Chairman of the Intellectual Property Regulation Board, Chris is also the Master of Pembroke College Cambridge.
Fashion perspective and Blockchain
Rosie Burbidge, Gunnercooke LLP

Rosie is a partner at Gunnercooke LLP. She helps her clients to develop, expand, exploit and enforce their intellectual property rights.
Rosie has worked for a wide range of high profile technology and fashion clients including with businesses at the cutting edge of the Internet of Things, wearables and blockchain.
Rosie’s book, European Fashion Law (Edward Elgar Publishing) was published in February 2019. She keeps on top of the latest fashion law trends via her dedicated website: EuropeanFashionLaw.com.
Rosie has been a GuestKat since September 2016. She covers the latest cases and cutting edge issues for IPKat and a wide range of other publications.
English cases law decisions
Jade MacIntyre, Allen & Overy LLP

Jade is a Chartered UK Trade Mark Attorney, European Trade Mark and Design Attorney, specialising in trade mark prosecution and portfolio management.
Working with major brands and international organisations in relation to trade mark selection, clearance searches, enforcement (including anti-counterfeiting, oppositions and revocations, passing off and domain name disputes) and agreements (licenses, assignments and co-existence).
Jade’s experience spans advertising and media, entertainment and hospitality, as well as financial services, telecommunications, manufacturing and consumer goods sectors.
New types of marks
Andy King, Mewburn Ellis

Andy is a member of the Mewburn Ellis trade mark team dealing with a wide range of work including devising filing strategies, prosecution of applications, opposition, revocation and invalidity actions in the UK, at the EUIPO and at WIPO (for international Madrid Protocol registrations). Andy is also authorised to act before the Irish Patents Office in relation to trade mark matters.
His clients are in a wide range of industry sectors including biotechnology, telecommunications, consumer products, electronics & electronic engineering (with a particular interest in wearable technology products), food & beverage, computer software, Medtech, pharmaceutical, retail and transport.
Andy worked for 10 years in the marketing industry in a range of roles for blue-chip, multinational companies, before moving to an advertising and design agency to work on branding projects and advertising campaigns.
He is a member of CITMA and INTA. Andy regularly attends INTA Annual Meetings as well as the MARQUES Annual Conference.
New types of marks
Kate O'Rourke, Immediate Past President, CITMA

Kate is a solicitor and chartered trade mark attorney, with over 25 years’ experience in relation to trade marks and related copyright, design and internet matters. Her work includes advising on the adoption, registration and enforcement of trade marks and designs internationally, particularly in the leisure and retail industries.
She led the Trade Mark Registration and Protection team at a City of London law firm for the past 10 years and will be joining Mewburn Ellis, a leading intellectual property firm, on 1st April 2019 as Head of Trade Marks.
Kate is Vice Chair of the INTA Pro Bono Committee and was awarded an MBE in 2016 for services to education.
Challenges for pharmaceutical trade marks
Christian Schalk, Bayer Intellectual Property GmbH, Germany

Christian has been in IP practice for more than 20 years. Since 2007 he is Senior Trade Mark Counsel in Bayer AG’s trade mark department where he heads the Pharma team. From 2001 until 2007 he was Head of the Global Trade Mark Center of Schering AG (now Bayer Pharma AG).
Christian’s team is in charge of managing Bayer AG’s global pharma trade mark portfolio. In this context, Christian supports strategic marketing teams in global trade mark development processes and advises his internal clients in all trade mark related legal and regulatory matters including licensing and M&A matters as well as in the field of copyright.
Since 2013, he heads the trade mark subcommittee of the German Association of the Research-based Pharmaceutical Companies (vfa). For the 2018-2019 term, he is a member of INTA’s Harmonization of Trade Mark Law and Practice Committee.
Protecting AI, Specs and Skylink
Sylvie Martin - IBM Trademark Counsel for EMEA countries

Sylvie joined the IBM France IP Law Department in April 1990 and has been involved in many IP matters.
Since 2008, Sylvie has overseen IBM Corporation trade mark matters in Europe Middle-East and Africa (EMEA). Sylvie and her team handle trade mark clearance, filing, prosecution and any related enforcement or contractual activity in EMEA countries, either internally or through outside law firms.
Magicians, psychopaths and lawyers
Guy Hollingworth, One Essex Court

Guy has been a barrister at One Essex Court, a leading commercial and IP set, since 2001. He is recognised by Chambers and Partners and Legal 500 as a leader in IP.
His practice encompasses both contentious and non-contentious work and he regularly appears in the High Court, Court of Appeal, the UKIPO and has twice appeared in the Supreme Court.
He is also a CEDR accredited mediator and member of the Civil Mediation Council, as well as being a renowned magician and Member of the Inner Magic Circle.
Changes of registry proceedings - european panel
Chair: Kelly Saliger, CMS

Kelly trained as a Barrister and cross-qualified as a Solicitor in March 2012. Later the same year she also qualified as a Chartered Trade Mark Attorney. Kelly has been working in IP since 2009, with Olswang LLP before its recent merger with CMS UK.
Kelly sits on the CITMA Council and is part of the Events Committee. She has previous secondment experience for Sky International and spent a number of months working with her colleagues in the Paris office on an international litigation case.
Karina Dimidjian-Lecomte, Casalonga

Karina has practiced intellectual property law since 2000, representing clients in diverse industries, including cosmetics, sports and entertainment, publishing, telecommunications and apparel.
She advises clients in diverse trade mark, design, copyright and domain name matters. Her practice includes domestic and foreign trade mark clearance and prosecution, opposition and appeal procedures before the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the French Trade Mark Office, domain name disputes, counterfeit goods and customs, drafting intellectual property contracts and conducting intellectual property audits.
She is admitted to both the Paris and the New York bars and is also a representative before the EUIPO.
João Miranda de Sousa, Garrigues

João is a dual qualified lawyer both in Spain and in Portugal. He is Partner in Charge of the Portuguese legal practice of Garrigues and heads Garrigues’ Iberian Intellectual Property practice area.
Between 1991 and 1995 he was senior lawyer at the European Investment Bank (Luxembourg) and between 1995 and 2008, João Miranda de Sousa worked at the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) where he occupied several top management positions.
In recognition of his work at the EUIPO, he received the Business Outstanding Achievement Award at the MIP Awards.
EU decisions
Andrew Norris, Barrister, Hogarth Chambers

Andrew's practice encompasses all aspects of intellectual property law and related commercial litigation. His clients range from individual rights holders to multinational brand owners, and include record companies, performing artists, high profile individuals, broadcasters and intergovernmental organisations.
He has acted for clients in a wide variety of courts including the Court of Justice of the European Union, the General Court, all levels of the High Court and IPEC. Andrew also frequently appears in the UK Trade Mark Registry and advises in relation to EUIPO proceedings.

Newly relaunched in November 2018, Brigade offer incredible seasonal produce on their grill and wood oven and a training kitchen which helps the homeless develop skills and motivation to find employment through an apprenticeship program.
