EUIPO reaches 5 million applications
The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has reached a significant milestone, receiving its 5 millionth trade mark and design application since its establishment in 1994.

This landmark follows a recent growth in trade mark applications, which increased by 7.7% in the first half of 2025.
Record-breaking growth continues
According to Clarivate's Robert Reading, the EUIPO processed 81,154 European Union Trade Mark (EUTM) applications in the first six months of 2025 - 5,835 more than the same period in 2024.
Robert noted that EU applicants filed 49,423 applications - a 3.2% increase on the same period in 2024; and China-based applicants filed 14,483 applications, a 20% increase.
Tangible business benefits
The value of registered intellectual property rights extends far beyond protection. Recent research from the EUIPO and European Patent Office demonstrates that firms with registered IP rights achieve 24% higher revenue per employee and pay wages that are 22% higher on average.
Small and medium enterprises also see notable benefits, with a 44% increase in revenue per employee compared to similar firms without registered IP. Even large corporations benefit substantially, enjoying a 16% revenue increase per employee.
Looking ahead
In December 2025, the EUIPO will begin registering a new intellectual property right: Craft and Industrial Geographical Indications. This development will provide additional protection opportunities for businesses seeking to safeguard their geographical heritage and authenticity.
