The shadow Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property role now mirrors that of the Government Minister for Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property which is held by Viscount Camrose, a Conservative peer sitting in the House of Lords.

The government ministerial portfolio includes responsibility for the Intellectual Property Office as well as artificial intelligence and cyber. Viscount Camrose was appointed into the role in March.

Before the reshuffle, the shadow intellectual property role was held by Labour MP Chi Onwurah as part of her shadow business portfolio.

Ms Onwurah, the MP for Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Central is now Shadow Minister for Science, Research and Innovation.

In a statement, Mr Rodda said: “After two-and-a-half years as Labour’s Shadow Minister for Pensions, I am thrilled to be asked by Keir Starmer to take on a new brief as Labour’s Shadow Minister for AI and Intellectual Property.

“This new role will work with Labour’s Science, Innovation and Technology team to think about how we use AI as a society and how we protect intellectual property.”

Mr Rodda’s constituency will become part of the new Reading Central constituency at the next election following the boundary review.

Mr Rodda has been the MP for Reading East since 2017 and was formerly the Shadow Minister for Pensions, prior to which he held the shadow portfolio for busses.
