LawCare launches new wellbeing course
LawCare has launched a new free online course for anyone with a role in creating healthier, more supportive working environments across the legal sector.
Mental health charity, LawCare recently released ‘Supporting legal workplace wellbeing’, its third instalment in its Fit for Law series, developed in collaboration with academics at the University of Sheffield and The Open University.
The course is aimed at managers, team leaders, wellbeing leads and champions, as well as people working in human resources, learning and development and other support roles. It provides practical guidance on how individuals and organisations can help create workplaces where people feel supported and able to speak openly.
What you’ll learn
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
- Develop your own theory of change record to provide a roadmap for supporting wellbeing in your own legal workplace.
- Understand the wider context in which your role is situated.
- Explore how skills such as emotional competence and professional resilience will equip you to support others.
- Explore wellbeing challenges that are likely to arise within legal workplaces and develop evidence-informed strategies to tackle them.
- Reflect on how to embed wellbeing within workplace culture in a sustainable and effective way which is evaluated appropriately.
The course takes approximately two to four hours and is split into shorter sections, so you can work through it at your own pace.
The Fit for Law series promotes psychologically and emotionally healthier ways of working in the law, with part 1, ‘Managing and understanding yourself’, and part 2, ‘Working with others’ both available to access here.
Trish McLellan, Interim CEO of LawCare, said: “We know from our support service and Life in the Law 2025 research that workplace culture and the way people are managed can have a big impact on wellbeing. Many people want to support colleagues, have better conversations and create healthier ways of working, but aren't always sure where to start. This course is designed to help them do that.”
Dr Emma Jones, Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield and a LawCare Trustee, said: “Many individuals within the legal sector are involved in supporting workplace wellbeing. This may be as part of their job description, through a volunteer role, or as part of their wider responsibilities as a line manager or leader. Despite this, research demonstrates that legal workplaces do not always prioritise resourcing this work and providing adequate training.
“The new Fit for Law course aims to provide evidence-informed practical support for anyone who wishes to upskill themselves in this area and drive positive change in their workplace.”
