New course for formalities staff launches
A brand-new online course which aims to equip formalities staff with the fundamentals of UK Registered Design procedure has launched.

The new course joins our existing suite of online, on-demand learning opportunities: Introduction to Trade Mark Renewals & Recordals, and Introduction to Trade Mark Administration & Formalities.
The three courses equip early career formalities staff with valuable understanding of core professional skills.
Complementing on-the-job training, the Introduction to Registered Design Administration, Formalities and Renewals Course is intended for formalities staff in the IP profession, in both private practice and in-house, with up to one year of experience.
It is also suited for anyone with solid experience of trade mark formalities and renewals looking to expand their knowledge.
Participants will be led through nine interactive learning units.
Once all units are completed users will unlock a 10 question quiz – a score of 80% or higher allows successful participants to download and print a certificate to show their completion.
The quiz can be taken an unlimited number of times, with units able to be revisited as required.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the functionalities of filing and deferment
- Explain the different stages of the design registration process, including creation, searching, examination and registration
- Appreciate the similarities and differences between the UK application system and overseas registered designs.
Simon Bentley, a reviewer for the course, said “Designs are often overlooked when compared to trade marks and patents and have their own particular requirements.
“Designs are growing in importance for our clients who want to protect not just three-dimensional shapes but also logos, packaging designs and typefaces.
“I would recommend this course to anyone starting in formalities or as a paralegal.
“Designs might not be something that trade mark attorneys do on a day-to-day basis but the course will cover the basics so that you feel comfortable with design cases going forward.”
